This historic city is young at heart

thanks to its vibrant neighbourhoods, festive spirit and

full-of-life locals. In 1859, New Westminster was selected

as the fi rst capital of the new colony of British Columbia

and offi cially named by Queen Victoria, after her

favourite part of London. New Westminster of today is

a place that knows how to blend old and new, creating

a beautiful modern community where history is not just

preserved, it’s celebrated. ‘New West’ is dotted with

delightful character homes and museums that enable

travellers to revisit the splendour and grace of BC’s

pioneer days.

Nowhere is New Westminster’s energy more evident than

in its festive spirit; this is a city that is over 150 years old

and continually celebrating with festivals like the Hyack

Festival in May, the Royal City Show and Shine in July or

the New Westminster Cultural Crawl in august. Be sure

to partake in the six activities that all visitors must do on

a visit to New Westminster, spread out over six distinct

neighbourhoods – 12th Street, Historic Downtown, The

Quay, Queensborough, Uptown and Sapperton. In no

particular order, they are:
