Vancouver

Vancouverites often boast about
living in a city where you can ski in the morning, sail in

the afternoon and still make it back to town in time for

a beer at a local microbrewery before sunset. It’s true, it

can be done, but to cram three of the city’s best-loved

pursuits into one day would defy Vancouver’s laidback

pace and casual style. In a city where yoga pants are the

standard dress for everything from dinner on South

Granville to shopping on Robson, the best way to enjoy

your visit is to do as the locals do – put on your walking

shoes and get outdoors in this drop-dead gorgeous city.

Surrounded by the Pacific ocean and the nearby

Coast Mountain Range, Canada’s third-largest city is

consistently rated one of the most liveable cities in the

world. But while the area’s natural beauty and amenities

boost Vancouver to the top of international surveys, it’s

the eclectic neighbourhoods that give Vancouver its

soul. From the trendy Yaletown neighbourhood to Little

Italy on Commercial Drive, Vancouver offers an open,

welcoming environment for all visitors.

A good place to start exploring is in Gastown, where

Vancouver began. Gastown’s postcard-perfect

cobblestone streets are lined with boutiques, galleries

and brew pubs, as well as historical landmarks like the

world’s fi rst steam clock. South of Gastown is Chinatown,

the second-largest in North america. Chinatown is an

integral part of Vancouver’s identity and is the place

to go for authentic Chinese food. a visit to Chinatown

is a sensory experience, reminiscent of the sights, the

smells and the sounds of a Hong Kong marketplace: mouthwatering

roasted ducks hanging in shop windows, baskets

of bright pink shrimp and orange roasted squid lining the

sidewalks, and shopkeepers haggling boisterously over the

price of a traditional Chinese dress. But if it’s imaginative

Pacifi c Northwest cuisine you’re craving, continue your

walk from Chinatown into Yaletown. In Yaletown’s past

life, it was a gritty industrial district. The trendy Yaletown

neighbourhood of today is eclectic and eccentric, with its

old red-brick warehouses beautifully transformed into cafes,

bars, boutique shops and some of the city’s best restaurants.

The crowning jewel of Vancouver’s nearly 200 city parks

is Stanley Park. Stanley Park is an evergreen oasis of 400

hectares (1,000 acres) situated on the edge of downtown.

It’s encircled by an 8.8 km (5.5 mi) seawall, used by

runners, bicyclers, rollerbladers and walkers. an afternoon

in Stanley Park is a must on every Vancouver itinerary. as

you wander through Stanley Park, keep your eyes open for

squirrels, raccoons, swans and movie trailers – Vancouver

is also the third-biggest fi lm and TV production center

in North america, after New York and Hollywood. at

the southern edge of Stanley Park surrounding beautiful

English Bay is the lively, colourful, gay-friendly West End

neighbourhood. During the summer months, Vancouver's

annual Gay Pride Parade and the Celebration of Light

fi reworks display both attract crowds of 500,000 to the

West End to watch the festivities.

After scouting Vancouver’s downtown, hop on a water taxi

and putter over to Granville Island Public Market. Granville

Island is a city landmark, filled with a frenzy of jugglers,
painters and magicians who enchant passers-by. It’s also
home to an art school, shops, restaurants, theatres, galleries
and the Granville Island Hotel. Find a bench and watch the
flood of pleasure crafts and tugboats come and go through
False Creek. From Granville Island you can walk to the
nearby Kitsilano neighbourhood; Vancouver’s former hippy
hangout is now known for its stylish, friendly residents and
trendy dining options. And then there’s the shopping… this
is the neighbourhood that gave the world Lululemon and
Mountain Equipment Co-op, and yet it is still as known for
its small town residential feel as for its famous Kits beach.

If you love tracking down cheap thrills, you’ll fit in well on
Vancouver’s Main Street. Hip, funky, with downto-earth
inexpensive boutiques and antique shops, Main Street is
home to Indie labels and vintage-inspired fashions. Fewer
than 20 blocks east of Main Street is Commercial Drive. It’s
possible to walk along Commercial Drive and hear every language
from Farsi and French to Thai and Tagalog. Sit at a café sipping
a frothy cappuccino or sample 200-plus flavours of gelato
and you might be able to convince yourself that you’re in Italy, if just
for a moment. One block later you’re enjoying mojito cocktails and
blackbean soup as if you’re in Havana.

Life in Vancouver changed forever on July 2, 2003, when the International

Olympic Committee selected Vancouver as the Host City for the Vancouver

2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. And of course, once the games

finally arrived in 2010, Vancouver was ready for its close-up! The world

caught a glimpse of its pretty face, celebratory spirit and warm hospitality.

But for all of its polish, the spirit of Vancouver’s neighbourhoods ensures

that Vancouver is still a down-to-earth, friendly and accessible city at heart.
